Science is taught in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade at Hayden Heights by a science specialist for a three week rotation and supplemented by the classroom teacher during the off rotation. Instruction includes lots of observation, inquiry based hands-on activities, discussions and journaling. Through small group investigations, students also learn the skills required to be scientists like geologists, electricians, inventors, and cartographers. In addition, field trips to the Minnesota Zoo, Como Planetarium, and Belwin enhance the science curriculum. Fourth and Sixth Graders learn more about science, mathematics and technology through aerospace education by attending a week long session at the Minnesota National Guard 133rd Airlift Wing. Many | | Researching Planets in Science | of the concepts learned are cemented when the 5th and 6th graders attend Physics Circus in January presented by 5 physics professors from the U of M. Environmental education is enhanced for the fifth graders when they attend Audobon Center in the Spring. The science fair is a highlight of the year. This year's fair will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 6:00-7:30 p.m. All sixth graders are required to make an invention, and fourth and fifth grade are required to make a science project. First through third are not required to do a project but are invited to participate. (See newsletter link)
The National and Minnesota standards serves as the curriculum guide for lessons and concepts taught . Safety is an integral part of the student's day. (see safety rules)

Science Safety Rules Safety is a very important and integral part of science. All students are taught the safety rules at the beginning of the year, reviewed at the beginning of each rotation and on a daily basis. At the beginning of the year, each child needs to have a safety contract signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate fully in scientific investigations. |
