  • About the Media Center
The Hayden Heights Media Center is run by Ms. Mund, a full time licensed media specialist. It is currently home to around 28,000 materials.

The media center also features open checkout, so any student can come to the media center at any time during the day to checkout the books they need.

    Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a testing system used by Saint Paul Public schools that has a special place at Hayden Heights. Students are initially tested and given a range of book levels appropriate for them and are encouraged to read within this level to improve their abilities. After students complete a book at their Accelerated Reading level, they take a short test on the book. The goal is for all students to test at 80% or higher.

Thanks to the presence of Accelerated Reader, not only has the media center seen more use and great improvements, but, students are reading more than ever before.

    Reading Connection
Reading Connection is a partnership between Hayden Heights and St. Paul Travelers. Approximately 30 volunteers come to Hayden Heights once a week to have lunch with a child and then read together in the Media Center. Students in grades 1-4 are selected by their teachers to participate in the program.

Not only does Reading Connection instill a love of reading, but it also provides the students with an opportunity for a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a caring adult.

    Reading is Fundamental (RIF)

Its purpose is to help young people discover the joy and acquire the habit of reading.  RIF supports literacy development by providing free books for children to choose and keep, as well as encouraging them to read through motivational activities.  Reading is Fundamental, Inc. is a nationwide organization and is organized at Hayden Heights Elementary by the media center staff, district staff and volunteers.
